A plea for the book

In this day and age, books are more and more being considered as a thing of the past, a relic not fit for the dynamics of digital communication.

However, we should not cast aside the book as an unusable artefact of the non-digital book era. The plea I’m about to make has to do with another trend currently in fashion in the pc landscape : multiple monitors. Since the inception of the thin lcd monitor, and the subsequent drops in price, the average pc owner is starting to make use of extended screen real estate. This evolution is sped up because the newer tv’s can double as a pc monitor, and vice-versa.

So, we are adopting one mechanism for having a larger information display – multiple monitors -, while at the same time we are discarding another – the book.

What I have done is prepared this nice table of comparison between an lcd monitor and a book.

Comparison Table

As you can see, the book wins by a large margin.
